Empowering Women in Design & Redefining Success

At Yellowbird Design Studio, we believe there's room for all of us to succeed.

Empowering women is something we strongly believe in at Yellowbird Design Studio. Lifting one another up, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for other women to thrive aren't just nice ideas to us. They're part of our core values and the way we choose to do business.

For us, that belief extends beyond words. It influences how we structure our team, how we collaborate with others, and how we approach our relationships within the design industry.

It starts with recognizing that success doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Redefining the Way We Work

One of the many reasons we embrace a flexible, remote working structure is to create opportunities for talented designers to continue doing what they love while building a career that works for their lives.

We work with a team of incredibly talented freelancers who set their own hours and manage their own schedules. These are professionals whose capabilities and reliability have been proven time and time again. We trust them to do what they do best, and they continue to deliver.

Design is a creative industry. Creativity doesn't always follow a nine-to-five schedule, and some of our best work happens when we have the time and mental space to really think, explore, and create. Let's be honest: no designer does their best work when they're watching the clock, trying to finish a task before rushing out the door to pick up their child from school. That pressure doesn't necessarily produce better work. It produces stress.

And while this certainly isn't exclusive to mothers, motherhood often requires an extraordinary level of multitasking, scheduling, prioritizing, and time management. We learn to make the most of the hours available to us, finding ways to balance professional responsibilities with the very real demands of family life.

Why shouldn't we build a work structure that recognizes and supports that?

Our clients aren't concerned with whether we worked on their project at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m. What matters is the quality of the work, the ability to meet deadlines, and the communication and accountability that keep a project moving forward.

Of course, remote work requires trust, clear expectations, and excellent communication. It isn't about working less or lowering standards. It's about creating an environment where talented people can do their best work without having to sacrifice everything else that matters to them.

Building Each Other Up, One Opportunity at a Time

Supporting women doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it simply means making time for someone else. Recently, we had the opportunity to mentor a Humber College design student by providing a peer review of her project, sharing our experience and offering guidance, particularly around the food and beverage component of her design.

It was a small investment of our time, but we know how valuable it can be to have someone in your corner who is willing to share their knowledge, offer constructive feedback, and help you see your work from a different perspective.

Every experienced designer was once a student, a newcomer, or someone trying to find their footing in the industry. We all benefited from learning, guidance, and opportunities along the way. Passing that knowledge forward is one way we can help the next generation of designers find their confidence and their path.

At Yellowbird Design Studio, we don't believe that keeping knowledge to ourselves makes us more successful. We believe sharing it makes our industry stronger.

There's Room for All of Us

Over the years, we've built a wonderful network of talented professionals who contribute to our projects in so many ways, from 3D renderings and branding to graphic design and other specialized services.

What's particularly meaningful to us is that so many of these talented individuals are women and mothers who have found their own way of working within the design industry. Some have stepped away from traditional corporate roles. Others have built independent businesses or freelance practices that allow them to work around family commitments while continuing to contribute their considerable skills and creativity.

They're not stepping away from their careers because they lack ambition or talent. They're finding different ways to pursue both -- And we're better for it!

Another woman's success doesn't diminish our own. There is plenty of work, plenty of opportunity, and plenty of room for talented people to do wonderful things. We don't need to be secretive, territorial, or competitive with one another to succeed. We can be collaborators, mentors, colleagues, and cheerleaders.

In fact, imagine how much stronger our industry could be if we approached it that way more often.

Finding Our People at NEWH

This philosophy is also one of the reasons we've found such a meaningful place within  the NEWH Organization.

NEWH brings together professionals from across the hospitality industry, including designers, manufacturers, vendors, and other industry partners. And while the organization welcomes men as well, its commitment to supporting women and creating opportunities within our industry is something we deeply value.

It's more than a professional network. It's a community of people who want to see one another succeed. Whether it's creating connections, sharing opportunities, supporting scholarships, recognizing achievements, or simply offering encouragement when someone needs it, there's real value in being part of a network that wants to give others an extra leg up.

Sometimes, knowing someone is in your corner makes all the difference. Having a community that celebrates your wins, shares your excitement, and champions your work is incredibly powerful, especially when you're navigating the challenges of running a business or building a career around family life.

We believe in that kind of community because we believe in being that kind of community.

Empowerment Is More Than a Buzzword

At the end of the day, empowering women and supporting mothers isn't about suggesting that one way of working is better than another. It's about recognizing that talented, capable people can thrive under different circumstances, and that flexibility, trust, mentorship, and collaboration can help make that possible.

It's about creating opportunities instead of gatekeeping them. Sharing knowledge instead of withholding it. Celebrating another woman's success instead of viewing it as competition. And it's about recognizing that we don't all have to follow the same path to build meaningful, successful careers.

At Yellowbird Design Studio, we're proud of the talented women we work with, the opportunities we've been able to create, and the community we've built around us. We know we're stronger because of the people who contribute their talents, ideas, and perspectives to what we do. If we can help another woman find her footing, grow her confidence, build a business, or simply discover a way to keep doing the work she loves while being present for the people she loves, then we're doing something right.
